Sanctuary exists because of partnership.
Sanctuary is a congregation of the United Methodist Church (UMC) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), two Protestant Christian denominations that emphasize God's love for all people and the transformative power of grace. Because our community is denominationally diverse, we strive to be a place where people from different spiritual traditions or no particular religious experience at all feel at home.
We are simultaneously saints and sinners, Catholics and Protestants, and liberals and conservatives united as disciples of Christ living together in love for the sake of the world
That's not easy, and it wouldn't be possible without the tangible and intangible support of the New England Synod of the ELCA and the New England Conference of the UMC. The willingness of these partners to dream across denominations and take risks to follow where God is leading has brought us to the openness and sacred space we are blessed to call Sanctuary.
While individually we come from many denominational backgrounds, no prior experience of church, or a few memories of growing up in a faith community, our Lutheran and Methodist roots led us back to first and foremost celebrate that it is not those seeming differences but God's grace that defines us.
